This one was on the 2022 bucket list, but we never quite made it. Naturally, I was a very happy bunny when the husband booked it for my 31st 🍸
Thomas by Tom Simmons describes it’s offering as ‘French- inspired food cooked lovingly with local, Welsh ingredients’. It’s a good thing I don’t live in Pontcanna, because with this place and a few other gems on the doorstep (Heaney’s I’m looking at you) I would be a poor but happy woman 🤣
We had:
- Chicken Liver & Madeira Parfait with beetroot, spiced seeds and brioche
- Fillet of beef tartare with confit yolk, truffle and chive mayo
- Welsh Lamb Cannon with crispy lamb shoulder and black garlic
- Fillet of Welsh beef short rib and mushroom tartlet (pictured with the creamed spinach and Tom’s chips)
- Peanut butter parfait with banana, chocolate and peanut brittle
- Chocolate cake mousse with salted caramel and passionfruit
- Many cocktails – espresso martinis, an old fashioned and a Charlie Chaplin. This was my favourite!
The highlight of the meal for me was the parfait surprisingly – it’s not often my top choice of starter but I like to try something different! It was so rich and was perfect with the accompanying brioche. J still talks about his lamb main – it really was something to shout about.
The service was of a very high standard too. As expected, we had the table for a set period of time. When we were edging close to the limit (easy to do with three courses and drinks) the host automatically reserved us a table in the bar to continue the evening and took our drinks through for us. No trouble at all, but didn’t go unnoticed. The staff looked after us so well, thank you all!
Would return in a heartbeat for any dish alone, the perfect choice for an intimate dinner or to impress visiting friends and family – thank you for making my birthday meal very special indeed.
