Lefel 6 is the brand new restaurant on top of Hotel Indigo Cardiff, on the ever-bustling Queen Street. Previously Marco Pierre White’s, its been taken on in-house and is a great addition to Cardiff’s restaurant scene.
Chef Gethin Rees (previously of the acclaimed Seren Diemwnt) is at the helm in the kitchen and offers an international menu incorporating twists on some Welsh staples – laverbread ravioli anyone?
We visited twice – once for their launch evening and again to sample the menu. Unsurprisingly, the restaurant is situated on the sixth floor and incorporates a formal dining area, a relaxed fireside lounge, and a bar area complete with a piano and bar seating. If you visit for a cocktail you could take it out on the terrace, it’s slim and only has a few tables but offers a great view across the city and lovely sunset views.
The drinks evening was great, and word on the street is that there were canapés to accompany the cocktails – I think we arrived at the wrong time! I was a big fan of the Golden Road Gin cocktails though, and it was lovely chilling out on the terrace listening to the pianists in the background.
Our order
For our dinner at Lefel 6 we went for:
- Duck parfait with hazelnuts, two savoury welshcakes and orange purée
- 6oz fillet steak with portobello mushroom, fried spring onions, chunky chips and a peppercorn sauce
- Pork tenderloin with pickled apple sauce, fondant potato and broccoli
- ‘Lefel 6 eggs’ – a mango & passion fruit anglaise topped with italian meringue and vanilla salt, with shortbread biscuits to dunk!
- Two espresso martinis to round off the evening
My thoughts
I’m not usually a fillet steak girl (team sirloin here!) but this was lovely – super tender and cooked as requested. Fluffy and crispy chips, a good pile of rocket to mop up the peppercorn sauce, what’s not to like? J really enjoyed his pork tenderloin, another cracking sauce!

The starter and dessert were also delightful, the parfait/welshcake combo was the perfect starter to get your tastebuds in gear! Loved the creativity of the Lefel 6 eggs dish, designed as an homage to dippy eggs and soldiers.
Service was good. Every staff member we interacted with was helpful. We had our first two courses in good time, there was a significant wait for desserts and cocktails (collectively) but this was a preview evening, and the restaurant manager mentioned that there has been an issue with staggered service times for the night. I wouldn’t expect this to happen next time we visit.
The venue itself is tastefully decorated and offers two menus – the lounge menu for walk-ins and the restaurant menu, we ate from the latter. Lefel 6 is the perfect place for date night or a celebration, its £5-£8 for starters, £14-£29 for mains and £7-£15 for desserts.
My final verdict: would definitely return. It’s a great option right in the city centre with a chef who clearly knows what he’s doing. I’ll struggle not to order the parfait again though!
