It’s about damn time that I write about this one. It is, hands down, my favourite place to go for food in South Wales. A bold claim indeed — but very well deserved. When people come to visit, this is where we take them.
I have been to One O Clock Gate more times than I care to count, it’s an obsession at this point. They first opened mid-pandemic offering takeaway burgers that Dinas went crazy for, a welcome distraction from the madness that was occurring! Then came their Robata Sessions, served socially distanced on outdoor picnic benches. A mass of delicious sharing platters of chicken, noodles, rice, aubergines, all wonderful. And the sake bombs were a fun bit of theatre – a highlight of lockdown for us.
Fast forward to now, and OOG are in their prime. They’ve now taken over an old function room at Dinas Powys Golf Club, and fully decked the space out with wooden and leather details, lots of (enviably healthy) houseplants and a well-stocked bar. It’s a great place to while away a weeknight or catch up with friends. And the menu, well. I have tried 95% of it, and there is nothing I would not order again.
For the sake of this post actually being useful, here are my top 5 burgers and small plates. Their menu rotates often, so some of these may not be available when you visit.
Burgers
1. The Korean
2. The Teriyaki
3. The Soy Garlic
4. The Bulgogi
5. The Sichuan Stack
Small plates
1. Mac and kim-cheese
2. Crispy beef
3. Satay chicken
4. Charred hispi cabbage
5. Spicy pork laab
Drinks
1. Smoky passionfruit Old Tom
2. Miso caramel espresso martini
3. Lemongrass margarita
4. Rosebud cocktail
5. One of their many gins with a tonic!
At this point I consider OOG to be a specialist subject, so if you have any questions please drop me a message or comment below. They are great for gluten and dairy free diets too — just let them know when booking/on arrival.
Go on then… what are you waiting for?!
